After a strenuous week, last Friday I sat down with my neighbor for a spontaneous 0.2 glass of Crémant. Surprisingly, on an empty stomach, we quickly started philosophizing.
My neighbor, herself from the media industry, asked me if I had always wanted to be a lawyer. My answer was quite clear: “No, absolutely not,” I replied, “I never wanted to be a lawyer my whole life, nor do I see myself as a typical lawyer.”
To get to the bottom of it, she asked me three very clever questions:
1️⃣ “What did you want to be when you were a child?”
I love plants. One of my favorite pastimes has always been picking and giving away bouquets of flowers. Therefore, when I was a child, I always saw myself as a florist in a flower shop.
2️⃣ “What career path did you want to pursue after school?”
If I had had the courage, it would have been a craft or artistic profession. I was particularly drawn to the stage design degree program. Instead, I chose the “solid” law degree. Although I successfully completed it, it was without passion.
3️⃣ “What plans did you have for starting your career?”
Afterward, I would have liked to improve the world (e.g., revolutionize the penal system and make judicial administration more efficient). Oddly enough, the visions of a career starter did not resonate with those in charge at the time.
My subsequent master’s degree in New Zealand was a very valuable experience for me personally, but it did not provide clarity for my professional future.
With the background of two successful exams and international experience, I first went to a large law firm. The independent work from the beginning and the close client contact were a lot of fun for me, but something was still missing there.
With the desire to create more and work less purely legally, I moved in-house to the corporate headquarters of a large corporation. I found rigid structures and a lack of budgets or visions to be quite significant hurdles there.
💡 Thus, the idea slowly grew to create something of my own and innovative, within which I can be more “me” and not just “the lawyer.” It didn’t turn out to be bouquets of flowers or stage designs, but designing innovative consulting products for people and companies with LACHMUNDlaw that make their lives easier and create added value brings me great joy.
❗️ My neighbor’s questions made me realize where my strengths and passions lie. Therefore, in the future, I intend to pay (even) more attention to them in addition to purely legal work; I have firmly resolved to do so!
